An opportunity to take advantage of your free time

Did you know that January is National Hobby Month? Whether you plan on starting a new hobby or picking up an old one, this is the perfect time to do so! Start the new year off right with an activity suited to your interests that keeps you motivated, healthy and happy.

Finding a hobby you are passionate about comes with a multitude of benefits. Firstly, a healthy hobby can be a great way to relieve stress. It could be something that will take your mind off of any struggles you may have in your daily life. Secondly, a new pastime will encourage you to take a much needed break. Lastly, a good hobby can potentially bring you some extra cash.

The list of different hobbies goes on, but there are plenty of easily accessible options right here in Sackville! For the creative minds, try journaling. Bullet journals are a highly recommended form of stress relief, organization and self-improvement. Create an original space to store all your ideas, events and goals for 2019 in a space unique to you.

For the fitness buff, try a new type of workout. Mount Allison offers a wide variety of fitness classes to accommodate all students. Whether you want to create your own workout in one of the fitness facilities or join in on a group dynamic, there are plenty of options for you. Check out all there is on offer at mountiepride.ca!

Looking to meet new people? Think about joining one of the many clubs and societies on campus. Mt. A has over 150 student-led clubs and societies that offer a unique experiences to students of all interests. From non-profit fundraising to varsity dance, you’ll be sure to find a perfect fit. If giving back to the community is a passion of yours, check out the volunteer opportunities being offered. You can find a fulfilling hobby by visiting Mt. A’s Employment Opportunities website. “I think volunteering is an incredibly important aspect of professional and personal development for students,” said Rebecca Leaman, Mount Allison’s career service coordinator. “Volunteering allows students to develop skills in a wide variety of areas, and gives them experiences they can draw upon to make life decisions, to promote themselves to employers and create valuable networks.”

If a more relaxed option suits your lifestyle, try reading a new book once a month. The R.P. Bell Library offers an extensive list of newly featured and released books inside and online at libraryguides.mta.ca! If this option is of interest to you, Canadian Métis author Katherena Vermette will be speaking about her award-winning novels on Feb. 6 at 7 p.m. at the library.
