Women’s hockey team looks forward to upcoming season

With two wins and two losses in the season so far, the Mt. A women’s ice hockey team prepares for more

During the first weekend of their season, on Oct. 13, the Mt. A women’s hockey team won against University of New Brunswick in overtime 2-1 at UNB’s home rink. Following their win, the team gained another win against St. Thomas University in Fredericton, with a score of 3-2 after the third period. This upcoming weekend, the team looks to play Dalhousie University at the Sackville Civic Centre, and St. Francis Xavier University in Antigonish.

Terry Rhindress, the head coach of the women’s hockey team, commented on the improvements the team has made in the past year. “At the [start of] the season, we wanted to be in better condition than we have been in the past. The players have put in a lot of hard work to get conditioning and speed up, which has helped us early on in the season,” Rhindress said.

“We strive to continue to be a better team every game,” she continued, “and that happens with experience that we gain together every day.”

Abby Beale, a second-year arts student, plays on the Mt. A hockey team as right wing. “Our team has a great bond with one another,” she said. “Our strength this season is our work ethic. When we [miss] the outcome we were looking for, our girls still put the work ethic in. Our girls are all hard-working players. It’s evident that we all want the same outcome.”

Kristen Cooze, the team’s assistant coach, commented on the environment that has been established so far. “With the positive environment that has been created since the start of the season, I think the team is looking forward to going into every game believing that we can compete with any team in the league,” Cooze said. “Believing in each other and working hard for each other will provide us with the results that we want to see on the scoreboard.”

“Everyone is moving in the same direction, and we are getting better every day,” Cooze said. “The combination of all these things has led to our recent success as a team.”

“Personally, I believe we are going to have a very successful season,” Beale said, “and I can’t wait to be a part of it.”
