Co-president wins Woman Leader of Tomorrow Award
A team of Mount Allison students from Enactus Mt. A recently entered four entrepreneurial projects into separate competition challenges. Each project placed in its category, awarding the team a cash prize. The competition took place in Halifax Feb. 25-26 and included all other Atlantic-region Enactus teams. The students will now move on to nationals in Toronto.
Fourth-year physics student and co-president of Enactus, Hannah Stegen, also received the HSBC Woman Leader of Tomorrow Award, which automatically nominates her for the national title award.
Enactus Mt. A is an entrepreneurial society which looks to enable social change, said Logan Toth, co-president of Enactus Mt. A and third-year physics student. Enactus began three years ago with $10,500 from the green investment fund for the Mt. A farm. Through a program they called Learn to Grow, the group created a better business plan for the Mt. A farm which included selling vegetable boxes on campus and at the weekly farmers market.
Other Enactus Mt. A projects include Textbook Osmosis, Solution Duck and Faces of Environmentalism. Textbook Osmosis takes outdated textbooks and makes curricula with them to help educate those not typically able to receive textbooks, focusing on penitentiaries and refugee centres.
According to Toth, Solution Duck acts as a student-run consulting business which helps emerging small businesses which cannot afford expensive consulting firms. Enactus Mt. A is currently working with the Sackville Food Bank by giving out Sackville Food Bank President’s Choice points cards in order to collect points for the food bank.
Faces of Environmentalism looks to improve human-environmental activity by enforcing environmental activism and artistry. Enactus Mt. A asks contributors to create portraits to connect eco-conscious activists with local and global issues, initiatives and information.
Each project won a place in its own category. The prize money will be used to help the team fund their trip to nationals in Toronto, said Stegen.
