Career Week: How Mt. A is helping students prepare for their futures

This semester’s Career Week is not one to miss. From January 31 to February 4 the Experiential Learning (EL) office is full of fun, informative activities to make sure Mt. A students are confident and prepared. Below is a guide to all of the opportunities offered to Mt. A students next week:

January 31, 5:30-8pm: A Cross Cultural Competency Workshop with Ivan Okello will be held via Teams. Okello will “explore themes such as the layers of culture, communicating across cultures, microaggressions and the compass of shame” and examine “how to be an inclusive ally living or working in a diverse setting.” Okello believes that “effective cross-cultural communication… is a strong skill in a diverse work/learning environment,” so be sure not to miss out on this fantastic opportunity.

On February 1 from 12-1pm, the EL office is hosting a Resume/Cover Letter/LinkedIN Workshop virtually through Teams. This is the perfect opportunity for students to ask questions or get advice on their resumes and cover letters before summer employment applications are due. According to Kaelan Ruddick from the EL office, “even the students who are comfortable preparing resumes and cover letters often say that they learned something new in our workshop.”

There will also be a workshop on Personal Branding and How to Develop and Communicate Your Professional Identity with Marina Byezhanova through Teams from 6:30-7:30 pm. Ruddick pointed out that “being able to communicate who you are and what your goals are in a professional and effective way will help with job interviews, networking, grad school applications and more – so this is a very beneficial workshop for students to attend!”

On February 2 from 11am-4pm the second virtual Employment Fair will be held through Kumospace. Moneris, Medavie Blue Cross, Vantage Marketing, Future GNB, Eastlink, Maple Leaf and more organizations will be present at this amazing network opportunity. These organizations are looking to hire either immediately or for the summer, so be sure to check this out!

On the same day, there will also be a workshop on Emotional Intelligence in the Workplace with Adam Peabody. As “75% of careers are derailed for reasons related to emotional competencies,” this opportunity to learn more about this essential asset will be held from 6:30-8pm via Teams.

On February 3 from 6:30-8pm, a How to Negotiate Like a Pro Using Social Influence Workshop will be held by Adam Peabody through Teams. This workshop teaches students how to negotiate salaries by recognizing their value and demonstrating leadership potential!

Finally, February 4 from 3-4pm offers a Summer Job Search Strategies Workshop held by Ruddick through Teams. This is the perfect time to learn more about how to find summer employment while applications are still fresh!

Students should sign up for these events through a Google Forms link found in Rebecca Leaman’s January 26 email. For questions, concerns, and help, students can contact the EL office at [email protected].

Students should also be reminded that the first round of Summer Internships is due on January 31st! Positions are available at Bagtown Brewing Company, EastLink, the Atlantic Ballet, EOS Eco Energy, Struts Gallery, the Canadian Revenue Agency, Festival by the Marsh, and more.
