Mauno – Rough Master (Aug. 19)

Rough Master is the debut album of Halifax-based experimental pop group Mauno. The album deviates from a typical verse-chorus pop arrangement, and features two instrumental tracks. Rough Master plays with song transitions, smoothly moving from one track to another and making the entire album fit nicely together, best enjoyed from start to finish. Mauno’s lead singer Nick Everett kicks off the album with a light and reverb-rich “Reeling.” Everett handles the vocals on the majority of the album with bassist Eliza Neimi taking the reins on the much slower, drum-heavy “Burn This.” However, if you don’t have time to enjoy the entire album, “Champs” and “Nothing” are great examples of Rough Master’s sound diversity. The album delivers a quick eight tracks, averaging around two minutes each, making my only complaint that I wish it were longer.
