Garnet and Gold wants to be part of your world

The Little Mermaid hits the stage at Mt.A

Say bonjour to our friends from the sea! Mt.A’s very own musical theatre society, Garnet and Gold, will be performing The Little Mermaid from Jan. 22 to Jan. 24. As rehearsals ramp  up and the cast sets to hit the stage soon, The Argosy had the pleasure of interviewing actors Catherine Tellier and Nick Delaney, to see what Tellier says is “a great re-telling of a story so many people know and love.”

Catherine Tellier, a third-year psychology and music student who plays the role of Ursula, commented on the anticipation leading up to the show. “There’s so much going on off stage and backstage that there is almost not enough time to get nervous,” says Tellier., “There was a good feeling of teamwork” amongst the cast leading up to opening night.

Nick Delaney, a first-year political science major and chorus member, elaborated on why everyone should come to see the classic Disney musical. First and foremost, he said The Little Mermaid is an incredibly fun show, and coming to the musical is a guaranteed good time. Delaney said buying a ticket is a great way to “support your peers and experience the arts at a relatively low cost.”

Both Delaney and Tellier mentioned which musical numbers they were most excited about.  Delaney says “Positoovity” is “wickedly incredible,” and the “featured dancers do great and I cannot take my eyes off the tap number.”

Teiller said she was obviously excited for her Ursula songs, but “Les Poissons” will be a crowd favorite, and is such a fun song. While the actors shared their favorites, every number will be a hit because of the cast’s talent and dedication.

As many Mt.A may know, Garnet and Gold is a wonderful community welcoming performers at all skill and experience levels. As a third-year student, Tellier has been involved with the cast for three years. “A lot of first years come and find their people in [Garnet and Gold],” says Tellier.“It is also special for the people that join the society later, to see them come in and try something unexpected.”

Delaney mentions when he first joined Garnet and Gold a few months ago, he was told that the cast is truly a family—and he knows this is now true. “I was told that there was a G&G family at the beginning of the year, but now, during tech week we are together almost five hours a day…and everyone is cheering you on, it’s truly a Garnet and Gold family.”

If any poor, unfortunate souls are looking to watch The Little Mermaid, Garnet and Gold will present the musical from Jan. 22-24. Tickets are available for purchase in advance on TicketOwl or at the door with cash.
