Tswana Culture Poem

By Sesame Moetse

Meaningful as I look into the mirror, I don’t see the box that the world tries to fit me in

I don’t see what the world tries to fit me into their box  I see how meaningful I am

The patterns of cornrows on my head

individually placed

to bring life and essence on to my head

I carry the honor, tradition, and history of braiding on just my single head

These patterns have been carried on from generations before me

Connecting me through the intertwined histories of black women worldwide

In a world where we share the experience of sitting in the salon chair for hours

Turning your head side to side to ensure our heads are braided to perfection

I am meaningful through generations before me

and how I’m carried out now.
