Events of Olympic proportions

The Mt. A Classics Society and their fun filled month

During the month of March, Mt. A Classics Society will be hosting an array of amusing events. Students from all disciplines are invited to come out and participate!

The Classics society kicked off their fun filled month with the An Evening of Tragedy performance on Sunday, March, 2. This performance consisted of three scenes from three different plays. Jacob Farrell, fourth-year commerce and classics major, directed this play as research for his independent study on Greek tragedies. Farrell elaborated on the significance of these plays at the performance, saying: “While thousands of years lie between your viewing today in the Motyer Fancy Theatre and the viewing of an ancient audience in the Theatre of Dionysus, I hope you will be able to see the ways in which these plays continue to be confronting portrayals of the issues that grip our society.”

Additionally, students can head over to Bagtown Brewing for a classics themed trivia night on March 15, also known as the Ides of March! The society’s executive team is organizing a fun-filled evening where students can learn more about Ancient Greece and Rome, while having a drink! As always, togas are not required, but certainly encouraged. When at classics society trivia, do as the classics students do!

The Classics society will be hosting the Olympic Games on March 22 from 12 to 4 p.m. Olympians can expect to have lots of fun on Alumni field playing a variety of field games like three-legged race and wheelbarrow race, with punny classics-related names. People can sign up for the games through the link in the @mtaclassics Instagram bio. There is a $20 registration fee for teams, but they will not collect this until the day of the event. Grab your bed sheet and head on over to Chirps! The Classics society will be hosting a Toga Party to finish off their month of events on Saturday, March 29. Students are guaranteed to have a good time!

Nicole Surette-Borque, a fourth-year honours classics major with minors in ancient Greek, Latin, and VMCS discussed her excitement for the upcoming events. As the president of the society, Surette-Bourque has put in a lot of work and dedication to make the end of the academic year fun and engaging for students of all disciplines. When asked what she was most excited about in this month she responded: “I am most excited to always see people enjoy themselves and have fun. Our goal as a society is to be as inclusive as possible and to have people come enjoy our events whether they are a classics major or they have never even heard of classics. We love getting to know new people, and hearing ideas that are appealing to those outside of our department.”

If readers are interested in all these amazing events and are interested in applying for the executive team, the society is currently looking for a social chair and a secretary-treasurer for the 2025 to 2026 academic year. To find these applications, as well as find more information about any of these events, readers of The Argosy can visit their Instagram @mtaclassics.
