How can you not be romantic about baseball?

United in joy and heartbreak, the Blue Jays touched the lives of millions

The end of the Toronto Blue Jays’ 2025 season leaves fans feeling devastated after a season of unity. Players, fans, and management staff continue to grapple with the 5-4 loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers in game seven of the World Series. Reaching the summit of this climb was no easy feat; in fact, who could have predicted this team would make it this far? Regardless, this, along with several other factors, is what made this season as heartbreaking as it did incredible.

Expectations were low for the Blue Jays, who had finished the 2024 season at the bottom of the American League (AL) East. With sports bettors giving the team some of the lowest World Series odds in the American League and MLB News saying the Blue Jays were “staring directly at the end of an era.” The start of the 2025 season did not favour the Blue Jays to go far but, proving the baseball world wrong, they grew to become a force across the league. We saw a remarkable season from star player Bo Bichette, recording the third most hits in the league, as well as improvements from veteran George Springer, who recorded similar hitting and home run statistics from his time in Houston 10 years ago. 25-year-old Addison Barger tripled his hitting, home run and runs batted in (RBI) statistics while pitchers Kevin Gausman and Chris Bassitt shined on the mound. After winning the AL East division in September, team Manager John Schneider said, “this is the most fulfilling team I’ve ever been a part of, with different characters, different skillsets, guys coming together for one common goal, which is what’s important now,” as the team looked to head to their first postseason since 2023.

As the Blue Jays unexpectedly returned to the postseason, they united a nation through a season of joy. Whether this was Vladimir Guerrero Jr. donning the home run jacket, Alejandro Kirk racing from base-to-base, or Springer’s Canada Day grand slam, the regular season was filled with unforgettable moments. The playoffs brought this electricity throughout the fall. Fans met Trey Yesavage, a 22-year-old rookie pitcher who recorded 39 playoff strikeouts and broke records while doing so. His calm mentality motivated the Blue Jays to defeat the Yankees as Guerrero Jr. famously called out, “daaaa Yankees lose” live on Fox

We then saw hope flourish as the Blue Jays came from behind to win the AL Championship Series (ALCS) against the Seattle Mariners. While injuries rattled the team, management shuffled lineups and continued to deliver wins. This led fans to learn the names of Andrés Giménez and Isiah Kiner-Falefa, who delivered when needed. Hope and a crack of Springer’s bat allowed for another famous “Springer dinger” to lift the Blue Jays over the Mariners to triumph in game seven. Regardless of past results, this team was meant to play on this stage.

Emotion pushed the Blue Jays through their final series, the World Series, against the Dodgers. While it would not be easy, Canada was behind this team. Their playoff run attracted fans who supported the Blue Jays in the Joe Carter and José Bautista eras, as people wore jerseys from various generations. A social media trend also saw Blue Jays fans post two pictures of themselves, one as a young fan and the other watching games in 2025. Aside from playing remarkable baseball, the Blue Jays fostered feelings of nostalgia. Every run scored by Guerrero Jr. or hit by Ernie Clement added to a deep sense of pride for Toronto sports fans.

Unexpected moments from this team’s success are what make this loss sting. Each game, Buck Martinez, Dan Shulman, and Hazel Mae welcomed fans into a community that shared pride and gratitude for a season unlike any other. While we may not know what will become of this Blue Jays team in the future, it is certain that this team touched the lives of millions. The Toronto Blue Jays united a team, city, and nation as they accomplished the unexpected, together.
