Second annual Jolly Cup

South Side defeated North Side in the 2026 Jolly Cup after a dramatic 6-5 overtime win. A relatively new tradition, the Jolly Cup is one of the most anticipated events on campus.

The  game was held on Feb. 28 in the Tantramar Civic Centre. Both teams contained skilled and eager players from their areas, including up to three alumni. North Side was coached by Will Stott, alongside  Isaiah Young, and led by team Captain Alexis Paré. South Side was coached by Divine Tissera and led by William Rector.

The game started with the Canadian national anthem, sung by Mount Allison Students’ Union (MASU) Vice President, Student Life, Anna Grear. Once the game started, South Side got a quick upper hand in the game, leading to a score of 2-1. The second period  was in favour of the North Side players, who made a comeback of 4-5. The second intermission  included a collaboration between the MASU and Bagtown Brewing Company. MASU organizers handed out the numbered rubber ducks to fans , who tried to get it as close to centre-ice as possible. The prizes for this contest included multiple gift cards from local stores in Downtown Sackville.

The third period of the game was hard-fought for both sides and ended with the score of 5-5, leading to overtime. Many have thought that the match was in favour of the North Side, but they were mistaken. South Side won the game 6-5 after a goal by Jack Roberts. Congratulations to all of the players who played in the match!

The Jolly Cup, named after last year’s organizers, John Roberts and Holly Wry, is only two years old, but already has had a large success. It was made when the MASU Athletic & Recreation Coordinator and Campus Life Coordinator saw a decline in interest in hockey on the campus. As a result, they made an event that not just promotes sport, but also brings houses together, and lets every student express their house spirit.

The MASU could not have done this alone. It thanks everyone who volunteered their time to make it possible: residents were responsible for organising the teams, Civic Centre staff, the players themselves, and the fans who came to support their residences and friends. Roberts said, “Everything that happens in the MASU is a team effort.”
