The next generation of Snapchat CEO’s: Discussing services that aim to prepare students for the workplace and a recap of Career Week

From October 4 to October 8, the Office of Experiential Learning and Career Development at Mt. A hosted their annual career week from October 4 to the 8. Nineteen different organizations took part in this event to help prepare students for their future endeavours. Over the course of four days, students were invited to various workshops and opportunities designed to prepare them for seeking jobs after they graduate or during their time at Mt. A.

Some of the workshops included information on resume and cover letter writing, creating a LinkedIn account, and advice from Mt. A graduates. Students were also given the opportunity to participate in an event led by Matt McGowan, the Manager and CEO of Snapchat Canada. McGowan and students discussed the importance of mentorships and how they build connections between individuals that are highly beneficial in establishing a persons’ career path.

“Taking advantage of our office and our services while you’re still on campus is really one of the smartest things you can do to set yourself up for summer jobs, internships, and life post Mt. A,” said Kaelan Ruddick, the Career Service Coordinator at Mt. A. Ruddick graduated from Mt. A in 2019 and now helps prepare students for life after their undergrad. Ruddick said that students who registered for events during career week but were unable to attend them were provided with recordings of the workshops or slideshow presentations in an effort to make the program as flexible and accessible as possible.

Ruddick stated that Career Week, along with the Office of Experiential Learning and Career Development, aims at educating students on “how to articulate the skills that they do have.” Students have various “skills and competencies just through virtue of being a Mt. A student,” Ruddick explained. She highlighted that students acquire presentation, teamwork, and interpersonal skills, along with having time and stress management. Ruddick continued by saying that the skills students develop when they attend a small liberal arts university are just as important as the academic knowledge students learn in their courses.

A more condensed version of Career Week, known as Internship Week, will take place in February. Ruddick explains that the Summer Internship Program is the biggest program that the office offers. Last summer, 77 students were employed in full-time, paid work through the Summer Internship Program. Numerous job opportunities offered by the Town of Sackville and the campus are available to students. Ruddick says that students who have completed at least one term at Mt. A are eligible to participate in the program and can access it through the Experience Mt. A website.

Services provided by Experiential Learning and Career Development are highly beneficial. According to Ruddick, “It can be hard to find support for resume and cover letter writing and other job-related things once you leave Mt. A if you don’t have the people who are good at those things within your network.” Students recommended that these critical services should be more advertised year-long on campus.

Career Week at Mt. A was deemed as a success. Ruddick urges students to take part in Career Week and additional services brought on by her and her co-workers because they provide “offerings for students in all different programs from all different backgrounds and with different interests.”
