A recognition of 2025’s most accomplished movies and TV shows
The 83rd annual Golden Globes Awards were recently celebrated for the best movies, television, and podcasts of 2025. Almost 30 awards were distributed encompassing actors, directors, musicians, and other meaningful contributors. The Golden Globes committee hosts a televised award show annually that features skits, musical performances, and speeches from winners and selected guests, leading to many hilarious and heart-warming moments between renowned celebrities.
The Golden Globes are considered a highly prestigious award ceremony in the entertainment industry, presented by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association. It is among the most-watched events on television every year, reaching an average of 18 million viewers. Despite the prestige the awards have garnered, the show has been criticised over the years. In 2021, the criticism caused the Golden Globes to take a break from airing, announcing the winners on social media in 2022 before returning with reforms the following year.
The awards are presented in many different categories, split between films and TV shows and further into subcategories and subgenres. Around five to ten options are nominated to win each award, causing much controversy between different opinions. This year, the night’s top movies, each winning two awards, were: Hamnet, a fictional indie film about William Shakespeare; Sinners, a Southern Gothic horror involving African folklore; the animated musical hit KPop Demon Hunters; and Brazilian thriller The Secret Agent. Leading the television categories were Netflix’s series Adolescence, which won four out of its five nominations. Finally, the medical television drama The Pitt earned two Golden Globe wins.
The 2026 Golden Globes marked a notable first with the introduction of a podcasts category. The six nominees included life podcast “Armchair Expert” with actors Dax Shepard and Monica Padman; “Call Her Daddy,” a sex-advice and comedy podcast with Alex Cooper; “The Mel Robbins Podcast” on science and advice; “SmartLess,” a comedy podcast on life experiences; and news podcast “Up First” from American National Public Radio. The Globes winner for this new category was “Good Hang” with Amy Poehler, American actress and musician. The first-time award was presented by rapper Snoop Dogg, of whom Poehler, an outspoken fan, was visibly excited to see.
According to the BBC, there were many other amusing and heartwarming moments that night. Actors Connor Storrie and Hudson Williams, newly-popularized from the 2SLGBTQIA+ hockey drama Heated Rivalry, presented an award in a humorous skit displaying their chemistry. Actor Timothée Chalamet won his first Globe for best male actor for his leading role in Marty Supreme. He dedicated the award to his parents and his romantic partner, celebrity Kylie Jenner. He also thanked his Canadian co-star Kevin O-Leary, a billionaire businessman, in his speech. Finally, the creators of KPop Demon Hunters delivered an empowering speech and spoke highly of all the love that was put into the film by both the creators and the viewers.
After 83 years, as one of the film and television industry’s most prestigious award ceremonies, the Golden Globes continues to stand out as a call to the greatest accomplishments for the previous year. This year, many diverse films, television series, podcasts, and musicians were pitted against each other. Over 30 mediums were recognized and even more attended the event and presented awards. The Globes sent off 2025 with trophies in many different hands, and celebrated another year of watching the action on the big screen.
