A new season of popular anime has been released for students to binge in the winter cold
It is the start of a new year, and with it comes new seasons of all our favorite shows. January 2026 is packed with sequels and new releases, and the cold winter season makes it the perfect time to catch up on old favorites or start something new!
On Jan. 8, the long awaited third season of the anime Jujutsu Kaisen began airing. Jujutsu Kaisen is an adaptation of a manga of the same name by Mangaka Gege Akutami. It had its original run from March 2018 to September 2024 in the Japanese comics magazine Weekly Shonen Jump. The anime aired its first season in late 2020, and has since risen to mainstream success spawning two more seasons and a separate movie. However, fans have been patiently waiting for new content for almost three years, since the second season finished airing in December 2023. Jujutsu Kaisen is famous for its stunning hand-drawn animation and well-choreographed fight scenes, in addition to the heart-felt, and often tragic story of its characters. If you are drawn to a visual spectacle, paired with characters grappling with hierarchy and what it means to be powerful within a flawed and cruel system, Jujutsu Kaizen is the anime to binge this season!
Jujutsu Kaizen is a dark fantasy, psychological drama, and action animated series. It follows the story of protagonist Yuji Itadori, who after eating a cursed talisman to save his friends, gets caught up in the ‘Jujutsu’ world — which can be understood as sorcerers that manipulate ‘cursed energy’ to fight monsters. Yuji, as a result of consuming the talisman, a finger belonging to the demon Sukuna, now has to embark on a quest to find the rest of the fingers so he and the rest of the Jujutsu world can finally cast out Sukuna for good. While the premise of the show follows expected tropes of the shonen-anime genre, Yuji quickly finds out things are not as straight forward as they seem to be. Death is at every corner. Characters are not as selfless as you might initially think but they pull their weight on fighting for ‘the good cause.’ While noble characters fall into darkness after the world fails them over and over again. Where Jujutsu Kaizen’s writing truly shines is the conflict between the character’s inner-world and the system around them. The anime invites the viewer to ask the following questions: What does it mean to be the strongest in an unjust system? Is pure-strength the ‘be-all and end-all’? Who benefits from these systems? Who is a threat to said system? What is the price you pay for trying to make the world a better place?
Jujutsu Kaizen also features music by various famous Japanese artists. The most popular is the song “SpecialZ” by Japanese band King Gnu. They released “SpecialZ” as the opening theme for the second part of season two in 2023. “SpecialZ” has gone on to be nominated for Best Japanese song in Europe, North America and Latin America in Music Awards Japan 2025. Furthermore, it reached position 28 on the Billboard 200! Jujutsu Kaizen also features other notable music entries such as: Eve’s “KaiKai Kitan” from Season 1 and “LOST IN PARADISE” by ALI. You might have stumbled upon these songs on social media or YouTube. In other words, Jujutsu Kaizen is a triple threat show: compelling characters, paired with great music, and beautiful animation.
In Canada, the first three episodes of the new season are already available for free streaming on the anime-streaming platform Crunchyroll, with a new episode coming out January 23rd. The first two seasons and the movie, Jujutsu Kaizen 0 are also available on Crunchyroll. You can also watch the first season of Jujutsu Kaizen and the movie on Netflix.
