Mt. A’s Conservatory of Music auditions

Future musicians showcase talent at the Conservatory of Music auditions

The Marjorie Young Bell Conservatory of Music opened its doors last Saturday, March 9, 2025, to welcome aspiring musicians auditioning for a place in Mt. A’s music program. From 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., students from across the country demonstrated their musical skills before a jury panel, hoping to secure a spot in the Class of 2029.

The auditions featured a wide range of instruments and vocal performances, highlighting the diverse talents of prospective students. Participants showcased their proficiency in wind instruments such as trumpets, trombones, saxophones, flutes, percussion, guitar, and voice. The auditions were conducted in two primary venues: the Brunton Auditorium and the Choral Room. For those unable to attend in person, the Department also accepted recorded auditions, ensuring accessibility for all applicants.

Mt. A’s music auditions are held in three rounds: January, late February, and March, which allows students ample opportunity to apply. Upon arrival, auditionees received registration packages and filled out three musical pieces to perform. After completing their audition sheets, they waited in the waiting lounge, where “audition buddies” were available to assist them. These student volunteers played a crucial role in guiding both applicants and their families, answering questions, and providing tours of the Conservatory, including classrooms, the Music Library, and other points of interest.

Before stepping onto the audition stage, many students took advantage of the practice rooms, refining their performances in the moments leading up to their turn. The majority of auditionees performed alongside collaborative pianists from Mt. A’s music faculty, enhancing their presentations with professional accompaniment. The audition process concluded with an interview conducted by the head of the music department. This final step allowed the faculty to learn more about each student’s musical background, aspirations, and dedication to their craft before making their decisions.

The atmosphere throughout the day was charged with anticipation. Nerves ran high, but so did excitement, as auditionees took the stage, aiming to leave a lasting impression on the panel. For many, the audition was more than just an assessment; it was a moment to express their passion for music and take the first step toward a future at Mt. A.

Students interested in applying for future auditions or learning more about the program are encouraged to contact the Department of Music at [email protected] or call 506-364-2374. With another successful audition season in the books, the Conservatory now prepares to welcome the next generation of musicians, eager to refine their artistry and contribute to Mt. A’s rich musical tradition.
