Sabrina Carpenter and the muppets was not in my 2026 bingo card
An unexpected collaboration occurred on Feb. 4th of this year. Disney released on their streaming platform Disney+ a 32 minute special featuring none other than pop-sensation Sabrina Carpenter. Is there perhaps a chance for the Muppets to make a comeback in the big ol’ 2026, despite the differences between traditional television broadcasting and streaming services?
Ah the Muppets, an iconic troupe of performing puppets since the 1950s. Created by legendary artist Jim Henson, they reached peak popularity in the mid 70s and early 80s. This was in part a result of the famous The Muppet Show which premiered in 1976. It was a live-action sketch puppet show that became well known for its celebrity guests. It was also responsible for introducing the iconic characters of Miss Piggy, Kermit the Frog, and Fozzie Bear into popular culture. The Muppet franchise also goes beyond the show, spawning multiple movies and spinoffs. A few more recent examples being the educational kids show Sesame Street and The Muppet Movie which premiered in 2011. It is safe to say Jim Henson and friend’s creations have been a part of the public consciousness for a long time. However, they have experienced a decline in popularity since the aforementioned movie.

Sabrina Carpenter just might be the perfect ambassador for the Muppets. In 2024 singer songwriter Sabrina Carpenter took the world by storm with her hit single “Espresso.” She has recently released two wildly successful albums titled, Short n Sweet (2024) and Man’s Best Friend (2025). Carpenter, as part of her albums’ rollout, also went on a major world tour, named The Short n Sweet Tour. The tour consisted of song performances of both albums, her signature cheeky humour, plenty of crowd-engagement, an exaggerated 60s style, and most importantly: camp. Lots of camp. Camp in this context can be understood as something overtly exaggerated /and/or artificial that becomes amusing, iconic and fun. Think of Katy Perry’s California Gurls album aesthetic, or moments from Lady Gaga and Chappell Roan. Camp usually has heavy associations with artists from within the 2SLGBTQIA+ community, but a lot of things are considered camp. A key characteristic of camp, or campiness, is that anything can be or become camp! A lot of things have been adopted as camp by the public, even though it might not have been the work’s original intention.
Okay, well, camp is cool, and camp is fun… so Sabrina Carpenter is camp, so what? Well, guess who is also a camp icon: The Muppets. In the past 2 years, there has been a resurgence of fun-pop in the past 2 years due to artists such Carpenter and also the rising-star Chappel Roan. Charlie XCX and Lady Gaga have also made a comeback into the spotlight. All these artists are masters of campiness and fun in their own distinct ways. In other words, the combined forces of these creative powerhouses have created the perfect stage for the Muppets to resurface.
Perhaps there is no better celebrity than Carpenter celebrity to bridge the classic charm of the Muppets, with the current trends. Especially the desire for lively fun and show-stopping artistic expression. If you are a fan of Carpenter herself, Chappel Roan, or comedy sketches, consider giving The Muppet Show special a try and perhaps, our beloved man puppets come back will become a reality.
