New restaurants and moved businesses

An update on everything new in Sackville

For Mt. A. students and residents alike who are returning after a summer away from Sackville, they may notice some big and exciting changes: there is a new café near campus, the old Pizza Delight has a new coat of paint, and there is construction for a new building on York Street where many notable stores, such as Blooms and Blind Forest Books and Novelties, once stood before demolition earlier this year. No need to worry, this article serves as your guide to this new season of Sackville in these ever changing times.

A two-minute walk from the R. P. Bell Library stands a new café called The Roost Cafe which is situated on 38 York St. Last spring, Sackville said goodbye to the beloved Cackling Goose Market, which acted as an organic grocer, frozen food provider, and, most notably, was the only dedicated gluten-free bakery in Sackville. While The Roost does not have a dedicated gluten-free kitchen, they do have an assortment of grilled cheeses and other treats such as lemon loaves and sugar cookies that are delicious. For drinks, they have a selection of hot or iced coffee, matcha, and lemonades with some fresh, fruity flavours. Recently, they have released their fall menu which includes pumpkin-spiced drinks and apple cider. This cafe is accommodating to students on a budget, as individual items are all less than ten dollars. The Roost is perfect for students looking for a new study spot on campus, want a quick break, or a bite to eat!

Near Pattersons and the Sackville Visitor Centre, a new restaurant has recently opened in place of the old Pizza Delight at 24 Mallard Dr., Namaste Bistro! Namaste is a Maritime business serving authentic Indian food with other locations in New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island. They have an assortment of signature curries, a tandoori grill, and a variety of appetizers like their onion bhaji and their balls of happiness, which are semolina shells stuffed with potatoes, raita, and different chutneys. For those over 19, they also offer a wide variety of drinks, there are classic and original cocktails, spirits, and over 25 different types of wines. It is great to see more variety of foods in Sackville and a hot curry will be a perfect pick-me-up during the winter months.

The new construction on York Street may have torn down the old, charming, green house where Blooms used to be, however it does not mean Blooms has wilted away. Instead, you can now find it in front of the Brunton Auditorium at 131 Main St! Stopping in, you will immediately notice there is a lot more room compared to the old location with lots of rooms to roam through and discover new plants, pots, and posters. The new location is also perfect for friends of the fine arts department as, before their show, you can quickly run over and grab a beautiful bouquet.

One last location which deserves to be mentioned is Blind Forest Books, which can now be found at their new location on the side of 69 Main St. The second-hand bookseller was originally near Blooms, but moved due to the new building being built; they will be celebrating their one year anniversary in the new location early this October. Their new location has the same, homey vibes as before, with a bit more space and you can find a wide assortment of second-hand books throughout. Blind Forest also offers tarot, oracle, and astrology readings for the spiritually inclined residents of Sackville.

Even though they have moved, Blooms and Blind Forest are a staple of Sackville, with the former being a part of Sackville the past fifteen years and the latter going on nine years next year. Over the upcoming fall, support for these new local spots is important, so whether you are grabbing a coffee, buying plants or books, or warming your heart with some spicy curry, rest assured you are helping a local business in Sackville.
