Erin Steeves is a fourth-year honours student in the department of biology with a minor in chemistry.
“My research has been conducted under the supervision of Dr. Karen Crosby, who focuses on the neural regulation of appetite, and how stress can influence appetite regulation in a brain region called the dorsomedial nucleus of the hypothalamus. My study is investigating whether stress hormones affect food intake when administered directly into this brain region in rats. This research is important because it could shed light on the mechanisms that underlie stress-induced eating in rats, with potential implications for obesity in humans.”
Anna Jamieson is a fourth-year honours student in the department of environmental science with minors in biology and political science.
“My honours project this year is focused on community awareness and risk assessment of ticks and Lyme disease. I am also looking at the effectiveness of geographic information systems in communicating spatial public health problems and the relationships of environmental variables and hotspots of the Borrelia bacteria (causing Lyme disease) across the province. Most of my work is done through ArcGIS mapping, as well as R and Maxent modelling. I will also be conducting public focus groups to introduce people to the new Maritime Tick Information Portal (maritimetickmaps.ca). The focus groups will be interactive and informative and everyone is welcome!
