Mounties show good progress in final tuneup before AUS championships
The Mounties varsity swim team travelled to the University of Prince Edward Island to compete in the Dave Mills Memorial Invitational on Jan. 16 and 17. The Mounties performed well at their meet as they continue to prepare for the AUS Championships Feb. 12 to 14.
The Mounties showed well at the meet, with lots of fast times and many people continuing to improve as the season progresses. Zoee LeBlanc won a bronze in the 100-metre freestyle, silver in the 100-metre breaststroke and a gold in the 50-metre breaststroke with a time of 34.33 seconds. Jeff Loewen won a bronze in the 200-metre freestyle with a time of 1:59.20. Madeleine Henry scored a bronze in the 100-metre backstroke in 1:08.05. Allison Loewen finished fourth in the 50-metre backstroke and fifth in a very competitive 50-metre freestyle race. Eric Lane finished fourth in the 100-metre butterfly in a time of 1:01.06.
Gerraint Berger had a great weekend, winning a bronze in the 50-metre butterfly, silver in the 100-metre freestyle and 50-metre backstroke as well as bring home the gold in the 50-metre freestyle. When asked about his expectations looking forward, Berger said, “I posted some good times coming off the holiday break, looking forward to focusing on AUS and hopefully dropping some more time.” With results like these, Berger and many others on the team look to have a good shot at making some noise at the AUS championships.
The men’s 4×100 medley relay team of Berger, Loewen, Lane and James Kwan finished second with a time of 4:06.10. The 4×100 men’s freestyle relay team of Berger, Loewen, Kwan and William Stewart also had a good result, finishing third in a time of 3:41.92.
Other strong swims were made by Emma Woodworth, Laurel White, Liam Bulger and Iain Crowell as they looked to lower their times heading into championships. Molly MacMillan, Annie Frise, Brenna Rothfuss, Siena Davis and Jillian Johnstone showed improvement in this final tune-up meet before championships.
