A cozy mess: tales from a Holiday kitchen

Behind the scenes of a perfectly laid table in the holiday season

It’s tiiimmmeee! (In Mariah Carey’s voice). It is finally that time of the year. The sun is almost never out; the air is ice cold, and the fireplace radiates with intense orange warmth. To be honest, the bells started jingling right when we finished our last shot at the Halloween Ducky’s party, and now they are ringing louder than ever. The brightly lit streets are now greeted with the gentle touch of the first snow, as thin frosts dance along the campus windowpanes. Then there are the smells of cinnamon rolls and gingerbread cookies, already drifting through the air and blessing our nostrils with that familiar nostalgic comfort. With every breath, the season settles a bit deeper. Suddenly, the world feels like it’s scented with cinnamon, nutmeg, chocolate, and vanilla all at once. The air feels thicker, not just with the cold atmosphere, but also with the scent of familiarity and cozy warmth. But of course, with all this nostalgia, comes the bustle of holiday cooking. This part of the season combines tradition, warmth and comfort with a lot of chaos and mayhem.

Across homes all over the world, the kitchen is where the real magic (mayhem) begins. The stove and the oven become the ultimate stages on that day. The whole house is filled with the savoury scent of that golden buttered roast turkey, generously covered with herbs and seasonings, and sitting comfortably in the oven. Meanwhile, the mashed potatoes have been carefully whipped to perfection, steam rising as the butter slowly melts on the top, adding to its creamy texture. The steamed vegetables also rest gently in their pots, simmering over low heat on the stove, and absorbing every juicy flavour. Yet, amid all these seemingly perfect processes, chaos reigns. Someone bumps into a counter, a bowl of potatoes topples over, dishes gracefully pile in the sink, and let me guess, someone forgot to grab that crucial ingredient from the grocery store. On a normal day, all this happening with stomachs rumbling might feel annoying and frustrating, but on this particular day, it feels just right. The messiness, the chaos, the sound of pots clanging amidst laughter, reminds everyone that this meal is more than just food; it’s a celebration of togetherness.

Once the savoury aromas settle and the table is set, the kitchen slowly transforms again, but this time, into a wonderland of Christmas baking. The air becomes rich with the scents of sweet, spiced doughs, fruity mixtures, and melted butter with sugar. Cookie trays are lined with differently shaped and flavoured cookies, cake pans brim with the richest and most fragrant batters, and the counters are sprinkled with flour like freshly fallen snow. Bowls of chocolate chips, perfectly diced fruits, and sprinkles sit patiently awaiting their turn, while little chubby hands sneakily grab handfuls in delight.

These experiences are as magical as they are festive. Playing games, having conversations, gripping mugs of hot cocoa with marshmallows floating on top, going for walks in the cold with that special someone, or even reading a good book alone on the couch or in bed amidst all the chaos, all bring a warmth that feels like a comforting hug. In the end, it is not the perfectly roasted turkey, the precisely cut cookies, or even the snow outside that makes up this season. It is the laughter amidst the chaos, the shared messes, and the scents that carry memories. Each person might have their own unique experience, and that’s exactly what makes all this so meaningful.
