Exploring Mt.A post-grad options for aspiring teachers
With the end of the academic year now one semester away, many aspiring teachers are now exploring post-grad options to complete their final step before entering the classroom. To help with this stressful transition, The Argosy has compiled a list of possible programs located within Atlantic Canada. These programs range from ten months, all the way to two years, with each offering a unique perspective on teaching, and the future of education. Whether you are interested in elementary education (grade primary – grade six), secondary education (grade seven – grade 12), or you are just looking to learn more about the possible education options available for you, continue reading!

Crandall University – Moncton, N.B.
Just a short 30 minute drive from the Mt.A campus, Crandall University offers both in person, online, and part time programs. The university offers both elementary and secondary education streams with its website highlighting 17 weeks of classroom work, two weeks of observation, and a 15 consecutive week teaching practicum. For those who enjoyed Mt.A small-town atmosphere, Crandall provides a similarly tight-knit campus community.
University of New Brunswick (UNB) – Fredericton, N.B.
UNB offers a fast-paced, 10-month B.Ed., allowing graduates to enter the classroom full-time in under a year. The program includes practicum experiences in both elementary and secondary settings. UNB also offers the Wabanaki B.Ed., centered on Indigenous languages, cultures, and worldviews, as well as additional programs for students interested in early childhood or adult education.
St. Thomas University (STU) – Fredericton, N.B.
Located across the hill from UNB, STU also offers a competitive ten month program. Students can benefit from a small, community-oriented campus while gaining access to Fredericton’s larger university environment. Offering both elementary and secondary education, STU prides themselves on developing leadership skills both in and out of the classroom.
Mount Saint Vincent University (MSVU) – Halifax, N.S.
MSVU offers both 14-month and 20-month B.Ed. programs, designed to prepare teachers professionally, academically, and ethically. The university stresses practical readiness and offers placements in a variety of school settings across the province.
St. Francis Xavier University (STFX) – Antigonish, N.S.
Ranked as one of the top Faculties of Education in Atlantic Canada, STFX offers a competitive two-year B.Ed. program known for its tight-knit community and practicum opportunities. These opportunities include teaching abroad in countries such as Norway, Australia, and Iceland. Of course, future teachers can also look forward to earning that iconic X-Ring.
Acadia University – Wolfville, N.S.
Acadia offered a newly modeled 16 consecutive-month program beginning in May, then finishing in August of the following year. Uniquely, Acadia offers the Africentric Bachelor of Education Cohort, aiming to provide culturally responsive, community-centred teacher education for African Nova Scotians, focusing on elementary-level educator training.
