The next few weeks are filled with unique autumn-based activities and community gatherings hosted by Mt. A societies and communities around Tantramar. As always, there are a large variety of shows, from student and community plays to concerts and drag shows. There are also many fundraising and awareness events in the form of marathons, walkathons, and screenings taking place this fall.
This week, Mt. A’s Drama Department presents Never Swim Alone at the Motyer-Fancy Theatre in the Purdy Crawford Centre for the Arts (PCCA). The play was written by Canadian playwright Daniel MacIover, and features two men in an egotistical battle; categorised as a funny and satirical story. The show will run from October 23 to October 26 every night at 7:30 p.m., with student tickets selling at only $6.66 on EventBrite. Marshlight Theatre, Tantramar’s live theatre company, also has an upcoming show worth checking out. The community theatre is presenting their inaugural show, The Return of Grace, from November 8 to 17. Tickets can be purchased on marshlight.ca.
Sackville Ceasefire Now is hosting a film screening and fundraiser on October 23 from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., featuring a film called Farha about a young Palestinian girl experiencing life in 1948 during the Nakba. As violence breaks out due to the occupation, a father hides his daughter in the locked pantry and promises to return. The film is featured in English, Arabic, and Hebrew with a 100 percent score on Rotten Tomatoes, so be sure to stop by the screening in Room 113 at Mt. A’s Sir James Dunn Building, to show your support. Bagtown Brewery is also hosting a walkathon on October 27 in support of the Atlantic Wildlife Institute. Run For Your WildLife will start at 1 p.m. at Bagtown and end at around 2:30 p.m. Afterwards, participants can enjoy some barbeque, pumpkin carving, and prizes! Registration for this event can be found on Bagtown’s Instagram, @bagtownbrewing.
Music lovers can look forward to The Nora Kelly and Wood Andrews Travellin’ Revue featuring GIZMO on October 25 at 8 p.m., hosted by Ducky’s Pub. Bagtown, too, is hosting a musical event—the Garage Concert Gasper— on Saturday October 26 at 9 p.m. Both establishments have other events to offer as well. Bagtown will be hosting Halloween Trivia on October 27 at 7 p.m. The minimum donation required is $2.50, with all proceeds going to the Atlantic Wildlife Institute. Ducky’s is hosting a Halloween Drag Show the following weekend on November 9. Tickets are selling at as low as $12 if purchased in advance!
On-campus, the Mt. A Textile Arts Society is hosting a communal Crochet Workshop from 2:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. on October 26 in the PCCA lobby. Later that week, the Owens Art Gallery is hosting their Annual Great Catalogue giveaway with hundreds of pieces up for grabs, at a first-come-first-serve basis from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on October 29.
With so many activities and events happening around town, there is no shortage of fun to be had whether you are interested in contributing to your community through activism and fundraisers or attending Mt. A workshops and plays. Be sure to mark your calendars, gather your friends, and immerse yourself in the season’s festivities.
